Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), Rose McGowen (Grindhouse), and Doug Aarniokoski (2nd Unit Director of Resident Evil 2) for an exclusive Q&A here at Comic Con 2008! Here are the highlights:
- Rodriguez showed some of the promotional artwork for Red Sonja, and invited Rose McGowen and Doug Aarniokoski, the director, out to give an overview and background of the franchise.
- Rodriguez relates his first exposure to Savage Sword of Conan at age 11 at a grocery store while helping his mother get groceries.
- Rodriguez does a spit take to illustrate his initial reaction to Rose McGowen when she asked him if Red Sonja was a good property.
- Rodriguez: “This is a geek’s dream getting to immerse [Rose McGowen] in this world that I’ve been immersing myself in since I was 11.”
- “This movie is going to be hard, it’s going to be cold, it’s going to be dirty, it’s going to be bloody, but I’m up for it! I keep thinking that someday, I’ll do a Jane Austin movie.” – Rose McGowen
- “After I decided to do this, there was this stake in the lawn, and [Robbie Rodriguez] got his Conan sword, and I got the stake and we had a fight on the lawn.” – Rose McGowen
- “What I get to do pretty soon is take a big giant sword and kill a lot of people. I think that sums up my attraction!” – Rose McGowen
- “Something I’m very interested in is seeing Robert E. Howard’s work come to life on screen.” – Robbie Rodriguez
- “Robert calls me up and says ‘Red Sonja.’ and I said ‘Oh yes. Absolutely’ … We’re going to shake it up here folks, it’s going to be nothing like you’ve ever seen. I can guarantee you that.” – Doug Aarniokoski
- Rodriguez notes that they’re doing many different locations for the movie and are trying to figure out exactly what the art style is going to be.
- This Red Sonja will be based more on the books than the comic “I will not have a mullet.” – Rose McGowen
- The next Robbie Rodriguez 10 minute cooking school will be Texas Barbecue! It will be on the Grindhouse double disc DVD!
- While there were many highlights of the panel, perhaps the best question was asked by a young girl who approached the microphone and said: “I liked Planet Terror a lot.” “How old are you?” asked Rodriguez. The girl replied “I’m eleven.” The crowd reacted with uproarious applause to which Rodriguez responded, “That’s…good to hear.”
- When asked if Red Sonja would be toned down in violence to achieve a PG-13 rating, Rodriguez simply noted, “My name…is DOUBLE R!”
