Marvel Marketing Guru Jim McCann kicked off Marvel’s first panel of San Diego Comic-Con 2008 with the usual introduction of guests: editor Nick Lowe, Matt Fraction, Craig Kyle, Jason Aaron, Daniel Way, Marjorie Liu—new writer of NYX—and C.B. Cebulski.
Editor Axel Alonso was still stuck in New York and therefore unable to attend. Kyle’s partner in crime, Chris Yost, was also not in attendance.
“There’s all kinds of exciting stuff. Uncanny X-Men #500!” said Lowe about the X-Books.
One such exciting thing came with the announcement of Marvel’s next X-Event starting in December: Inferno 2, a.k.a X Infernus!
Lowe talked a little about the upcoming Storm miniseries, saying there were all kinds of “bad a” stuff coming inside that book. Lowe said he held his tongue for all the kids in attendance.
Fraction talked about Uncanny X-Men, which he and Ed Brubaker co-write. Fraction said storylines include after effects from the mutants’ move to San Francisco and the Sisterhood of Evil Mutants. McCann noted his happiness over the return of Dazzler, which received a round of applause from the audience.
“You guys are all liars,” said Fraction after hearing the applause of Dazzler.
Way and Aaron talked about their respective Wolverine titles, Wolverine proper and Origins.
Questions from the audience followed.
When a fan asked about Apocalypse, the panelists reflected on how great of a question it was. After pondering for a little bit, McCann said, “Next” coyly to signal the next fan question.
A fan asked about the recent loss of Kitty Pryde and whether it would be addressed in the X-books.
“Uncanny #504,” said Fraction, slightly shocking the panel with a direct answer.
A fan thanked Kyle for the return of metal-wing Angel, but questioned as to why in X-Force he has metal wings but in Uncanny his wings are organic. After stroking their chin ponderously, Kyle and Fraction said they are aware of that and it will definitely be addressed very soon.
“Have him killed,” joked Fraction as the fan walked away.
“You weren’t supposed to notice that,” added McCann.
A fan asked about Vulcan and McCann said “See you at the Secret Invasion Panel” a number of times.
The final questioned asked about how the writing relationship between Fraction and Brubaker works.
“He does the nouns, I do the verbs,” joked Fraction. “Adverbs we roshambo for.”
